Embodiment Construction

[0054] The following description is merely exemplary in nature and is not intended to limit the disclosure, application, or use.

[0055] At the outset, it should be understood that the inventors are aware of a certain preference to describe or refer to a selectable coupling device between two rotating members as a "clutch", while the same device between a rotating member and a stationary member is described or referred to as a "brake". ". However, as far as one-way or overrunning clutches are concerned, the inventors do not subscribe to this convention and prefer to refer to such devices here as It is a one-way, idling or overrunning clutch. This preference is consistent with longstanding experience in its industry, where only the term "clutch" is used in conjunction with "one-way", "overdrive" or "idle" to describe and refer to a clutch that is not a clutch (between two rotating elements) These are devices of the type of brakes (between a rotating element and a stationary ...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a helical one-way clutch. Improvements in one-way clutches include a first embodiment directed to a one-way clutch having two sets of helical teeth arranged about an axis of rotation of a drive and driven member that translates axially into engagement or disengagement. The one-way clutch is biased into engagement by a wave washer or similar device. As the rotational speed of the clutch increases, hydraulic fluid axially aligned with the drive member by blocking the drive member pushes the drive member away from the driven member and disengages the clutch. In a second embodiment, a pair of one-way clutches with oppositely arranged sets of helical teeth provides one-way or overrunning operation in both directions. In this embodiment, each drive member is selectively engageable with a driven member by a hydraulic piston. A corresponding return spring biases the piston and drive member towards the disengaged position.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to clutches used in motor vehicle powertrains, and more particularly, to one-way or overrunning screw clutches used in motor vehicle powertrains. Background technique [0002] The statements in this section merely provide background information related to the present disclosure and may or may not constitute prior art. [0003] A one-way or overrunning clutch is an ingenious mechanical device usually associated with two coaxial or concentric parts in a power or torque transmitting assembly or machine. A unique characteristic or ability of a one-way clutch is its action in response to opposing relative rotational motion between its two or more components. When the first part attempts to drive or rotate faster than the second part in one direction, the one-way clutch disengages, allowing the faster first part to spin freely, transmitting substantially no torque. In the opposite direction of rotation, unless the second part...
