A gait optical flow field is acquired according to an individual gait profile image sequence and furthermore a gait period is detected. The gait optical flow fields in a plurality of gait periods in the gait profile image sequence are added, An individual gait optical flow diaphragm is obtained. Four gait characteristic vectors of a gait optical flow diaphragm line optical flow transverse component summation vector, a gait optical flow diaphragm line optical flow longitudinal component summation vector, a gait optical flow diaphragm row optical flow transverse component summation vector and a gait optical flow diaphragm row optical flow longitudinal component summation vector of each gait optical flow diaphragm of an individual are extracted. The four gait characteristic vectors of the testing individual are matched with four corresponding gait characteristic vectors of a training individual in a gait database. The testing individual is identified in the gait database. According to the gait identification method, gait characteristics are obtained through performing line decomposition and row decomposition on the optical flow component for identifying the identity.
