Abstract

The invention is directed towards methods and compositions for treating piles of particulate materials to inhibit and prevent the loss of valuable fuel or mineral dust from being released from storage piles or open containers. The method involves applying separately to the pile two different compositions. When separate the two compositions are low viscosity and easy to spray. When combined the two form a gel coating that is resistant to erosion but is flexible while the pile or payload is still settling, jostling, being bumped, and otherwise moving around.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present invention relates to methods and compositions for containing particulate matter in open-top containers, including but not limited to open-top hopper cars, trucks, piles, and similar storage and / or transport containers. It is known to treat large quantities of particulate material, especially coal and iron ore, with binders (sometimes called encrusting agents) to encruste the surface and thereby preserve valuable material and prevent dust from being dispersed by the particles. Prior adhesives are described in US Pat. No. 5,441,566, among others. These binders include latex, petroleum products, and pine tar resins. Other binders include phenolic resins mixed with polyisocyanates in the presence of catalysts (described in US Patent 5,244,473), basic phenolic resins (described in US Patent 5,089,540), and hygroscopic solvents (methyl ethyl ketone) , polyvinyl acetate, and styrene in water (described in US Patent 5,487,764). Additional dus...
