Embodiment approach

[0049] For some embodiments, the first electrode E1 and the second electrode E2 may be positioned on either side of the patient's spine 206 in the lumbar region, the third electrode E3 may be positioned on the upper posterior portion of the patient's right leg, And the fourth electrode E4 may be positioned on the upper posterior portion of the patient's left leg. As used herein, the term "upper posterior portion" may refer to the portion of the patient's leg between the knee and hip. In some aspects, the first electrode E1 and the second electrode E2 may be positioned on opposite sides of the patient's lumbar region 220 (e.g., the left and right sides, respectively), and the third electrode E3 and the fourth electrode E4 are respectively Can be positioned over at least a portion of the patient's right ligament 222R and left ligament 222L. More specifically, the first electrode E1 and the second electrode E2 may be positioned in the region of the patient's back between the L4 ...

Abstract

The invention discloses a method and apparatus for treating restless legs syndrome. The apparatus and the method are disclosed that may be used to treat one or more restless leg syndrome (RLS) symptoms of a patient. One example method may include generating first and second stimulation waveforms using a waveform generator; electrically stimulating at least a portion of a sacral region of the patient, based on the first and second stimulation waveforms, using a number of electrodes; damping or interfering with electrical signals transmitted from the patient's brain to the patient's legs via a femoral nerve of the patient using the electrical stimulation; and reducing the one or more symptoms of RLS based on damping or interfering with the electrical signals transmitted from the patient's brain.

Description

technical field [0001] The present embodiments relate generally to restless legs syndrome (RLS), and in particular to non-invasive techniques for treating one or more symptoms of RLS. Background technique [0002] Restless legs syndrome (RLS), also known as Willis-Ekbom disease (WED), is a neurological disorder characterized by an irrepressible compulsion to move one's body to stop discomfort or strange sensations. RLS most commonly affects the legs, but can also affect the arms, trunk, and even phantom limbs. RLS sensations can range from pain or soreness in the muscles to a "itch and you can't scratch," an unpleasant "itch that won't stop," or even a "squirming" sensation. These feelings usually begin or intensify during periods of quiet sleeplessness, such as while relaxing, reading, studying, or trying to fall asleep. For example, sitting or lying down (eg, reading, flying, watching TV) triggers these sensations and compels movement. These symptoms of RLS can make it ...
