Embodiment Construction

[0014] Embodiments of the present invention generally utilize a polymer sensor interface that connects a disposable container, such as a bioreactor, to a high precision reusable pressure measurement instrument. Accordingly, the actual sensor that measures the pressure in the bioreactor vessel is provided in a high-precision pressure measuring instrument. In some embodiments, the remote sealing system is formed from a polymeric material that is pre-sterilized and can be physically attached to the pre-sterilized single-use bioreactor. In other embodiments, the polymer sensor interface may connect directly to a reusable measurement instrument such as a pressure transmitter. Accordingly, the bioreactor and polymer sensor interface are disposable. This allows the use of precise and accurate reusable pressure transmitters, but still provides the end user with a pre-sterilized connection to the bioreactor vessel. Field instrument side and process side couplings will be described se...

Abstract

A disposable sensor interface for connecting the disposable container to a reusable sensing instrument is provided. The disposable sensor interface includes a polymeric flange connectable to the wall of the disposable container. The polymeric flange has a sidewall and an interface portion configured to receive a deflectable polymeric membrane. The deflectable polymer membrane is attached to the interface portion of the polymer flange. The instrument connection part is sealingly connected to the polymer flange. The instrument connection portion is configured to connect to a reusable sensing instrument. Another disposable sensor interface for connecting a disposable container to a reusable sensing instrument includes a polymer hose adapter and at least one instrument attachment portion. The polymeric hose adapter portion has at least one hose barb configured to retain a hose that slides thereover. The hose adapter portion has at least one interface portion configured to receive the deflectable polymeric membrane. A deflectable polymer membrane is attached to the interface portion. At least one instrument attachment portion is connected to the hose adapter portion. At least one instrument attachment portion has a cylindrical sidewall.

Description

Background technique [0001] Disposable vessels such as bioreactors are used to generate and support biological reactions for any purpose. Biological reactions can be susceptible to changes in temperature and / or pressure. Furthermore, as the biological reaction proceeds, the reaction itself can change various parameters in the bioreactor, such as pressure. Accordingly, it is important to monitor other variables of stress or biological response. [0002] The life sciences industry has transitioned from large, capital-intensive equipment made of stainless steel with larger clean-in-place (CIP) infrastructure to smaller equipment using polymer bags or containers used as bioreactors. The bioreactor bag is used once and then discarded. This single-use bioreactor technology significantly reduces the capital cost of the equipment. For example, in existing equipment using stainless steel CIP infrastructure, up to 90% of the cost of operating the equipment can be due to the clean-in...
