Embodiment Construction

[0017] The following description relates to systems and methods for predicting charge cooling effects of planned manifold fuel injections, estimating updates to manifold fuel deposit dynamics, and adjusting fueling schedules based on feedback from a manifold charge temperature sensor. The systems and methods may be applied to engine systems having manifold fuel injection capabilities, direct fuel injection capabilities, and port fuel injection capabilities, such as figure 1 engine system. The engine controller can refer to maps such as figure 2 An example map for identifying engine operating regions where manifold fuel injection can be used to improve engine efficiency. The engine controller can be configured to execute control programs such as image 3 An example routine for predicting the charge cooling effect of a fuel injection pattern (including the amount of fuel to be injected by the manifold) and adjusting the fuel injection pattern if the predicted charge cooling e...

Abstract

The application relates to methods and systems for central fuel injection. The methods and systems are provided for leveraging the charge cooling effect of a manifold fuel injection. A charge coolingeffect of a scheduled manifold fuel injection may be predicted based on feedback received from a manifold charge temperature sensor during a preceding manifold injection event. If sufficient charge cooling is not predicted, the manifold fuel injection is temporarily disabled.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to methods and systems for regulating fuel delivery into an engine intake manifold. Background technique [0002] Internal combustion engines may include a central fuel injection (CFI) system that injects fuel into an intake manifold. When fuel is injected into the engine intake, heat is transferred from the intake air and / or engine components to the fuel, and this heat transfer results in atomization of a portion of the fuel, which results in cooling of the engine components. Injecting fuel into the intake air (eg, intake air in an intake manifold, intake port, etc.) reduces both intake air temperature and combustion temperature at engine cylinders. By cooling the intake charge, the tendency to knock is reduced. This can also allow for higher compression ratios, advanced ignition timing and reduced exhaust temperatures. Additionally, reduced combustion temperatures in the case of fuel injection can reduce NOx...
