The invention discloses a method for identifying sudden drought based on instantaneous development rate, which comprises the following steps: (1) constructing a standardized evaporation deficit indexbased on atmospheric evaporation requirements and actual evaporation data; (2) preliminarily identifying drought events connected on a space-time scale by using a three-dimensional clustering method;(3) defining drought development and recovery stages based on drought severity changes; (4) defining and calculating an instantaneous development and recovery rate between spatially connected and temporally adjacent drought blocks, and identifying sudden drought based on the instantaneous development and recovery rate; and (5) defining the characteristics of sudden drought intensity, severity, influence area, drought center and the like.
