Embodiment Construction

[0012] Embodiments of the present invention and their advantages are best understood by referring to Figures 1 to 3, like numerals being used for like and corresponding parts of the various figures.

[0013] The block diagram of Figure 1 shows one embodiment of a system 10 for transmitting signals. System 10 controls echo cancellation to reduce problems associated with transmitting signals. Enables echo cancellation in the transmission of low-speed signals to prevent echoes from interfering with communications. Disables echo cancellation in the transmission of high-speed signals to prevent cancellation of high-speed data signals that could be misidentified as echoes.

[0014] System 10 includes telecommunications equipment 20 , gateway 22 , and communication network 24 . According to one embodiment, the telecommunications device 20 includes a facsimile machine such as a Type 1, Type 2, Type 3, Type 3 Plus, or Super GE fax machine. The facsimile machine enables information r...

Abstract

Controlling echo cancellation includes receiving signals associated with a call. A signal of the signals is detected. Whether the detected signal is a high speed signal or a low speed signal is determined. Echo cancellation is disabled if the detected signal is a high speed signal. The echo cancellation is enabled if the detected signal is a low speed signal.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates generally to the field of telecommunications, and more particularly to the control of echo cancellation. Background technique [0002] Echo cancellation is used to reduce echoes that can interfere with communications. However, echo cancellation can misidentify the data signal as an echo and mistakenly delete important data. Therefore, difficulties arise in controlling echo cancellation. Contents of the invention [0003] According to the present invention, disadvantages and problems associated with prior art techniques of controlling echo cancellation can be reduced or eliminated. [0004] According to one embodiment of the invention, controlling echo cancellation includes receiving a plurality of signals associated with the call. Detect one of several signals. Determine whether the detected signal is a high-speed signal or a low-speed signal. If the detected signal is a high-speed signal, disable echo cancellation. If th...
