Problems solved by technology

[0004] Although some two-layer helmets have been proposed to solve this problem, it is difficult to securely fit the inner and outer helmets on the wearer's head and provide the wearer with a friendly mechanism for disengaging the outer helmet

Embodiment Construction

[0025] Figure 1A , B shows a firefighter's helmet, including separate inner and outer shells. Figure 1B The inner shell (generally indicated as 10) is worn separately as an impact-resistant helmet. It comprises an outer protective moulding 12 of glass fiber reinforced plastic or other impact resistant plastic with an additional impact resistant layer inside it, as is known. The housing 10 is worn by the user by means of a net cap or pad with a head strap 14 and a chinstrap 16 . There is also an eyepiece protector 18 for protecting the firefighter's eyes when only the inner housing is worn. Figure 1A The outer shell (generally designated 20) includes a protective molding 22 formed of fiberglass reinforced plastic or other impact resistant plastic. It has a sufficiently large interior to accommodate the inner housing 10 . It also has retaining clips 26 for holding the outer housing to the inner housing. The outer shell has a full visor 24 for protecting the firefighter's f...

Abstract

A firefighter's helmet comprising an inner protective shell configured to be worn on its own as a helmet and an outer protective shell configured to be fitted over the inner shell and realizably retained thereon, a retaining mechanism for retaining the inner shell in the outer shell, wherein the retaining mechanism is moveable by a user whilst wearing the inner shell between a first position in which the retaining mechanism engages a said shell substantially to prevent relative movement between the two shells, and a second position in which the retaining mechanism permits relative movement of the shells whereby allowing the donning or doffing of the outer shell by the user.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to protective helmets, in particular to firefighter helmets. Background technique [0002] Existing firefighter helmets include a protective outer shell formed from impact resistant plastic or the like to protect the wearer from debris that often falls from burning building hazards. To also protect the wearer from the heat and sparks emitted by a fire, the helmet includes a visor and a neck protector to protect the wearer's head, face and neck. [0003] There are situations where all the protective effects of a fire helmet are not needed. For example, firefighters may provide rescue services in other emergency locations where a fire is not occurring. Then a larger fire helmet would be inconvenient, but head protection is still necessary. In particular, in the case of road traffic accidents, when firefighters may need to work in confined spaces, such as inside damaged vehicles, large helmets may be an obstacle. In these cases,...
