Embodiment 1

[0033] In this example, an aqueous concentrate may be prepared by forming an aqueous vehicle comprising a defoamer, surfactant, antimicrobial, and dispersant. Add technical grade thidiazuron and technical grade diuron to form an aqueous slurry. The slurry was ground to a median particle size of about 3 μm. A thickener and propylene glycol as an antifreeze are then added and mixed to form a water-based concentrate. The final composition contained 12% by weight of thidiazuron and 6% by weight of diuron, based on the total weight of the aqueous suspension composition, and contained no organic solvent.

Embodiment 2

[0034] In this example, the aqueous suspension concentrate can be prepared by the method of Example 1 except for the amount of active substance. In this example, the aqueous concentrate contains 36wt% thidiazuron, 18wt% diuron, 2.3wt% dispersant, 2.0wt% emulsifier, defoamer, insecticide, antifreeze and accelerator thickener, and balancing water. The composition is free of organic solvents.

Embodiment 3

[0035] In this example, four replicates of the mixture of the composition of Example 1 and ethephon were applied to cotton plants in four different fields in the Rio Grande Valley. The ethephon used was an aqueous mixture containing 6 pounds of ethephon per gallon. The composition of Example 1 and ethephon were diluted with water to obtain a spray mixture. The resulting mixture was applied to cotton plants at a rate of 32 ounces of ethephon and 4 ounces of the composition of Example 1 per acre. Ethephon is the trade name for 2-chloroethyl-phosphonic acid, which is used as a plant growth regulator to promote boll opening. The percentage of defoliation and percentage of bolling calculated by defoliation was estimated after 14 to 15 days. The results are shown in Table 1.

[0036] In this example, the ethephon of Example 1 was mixed with the trade name GINSTAR sold by Bayer CropScience (containing 12wt% thidiazuron, 6wt% diuron, 1-octyl-2...

Abstract

An aqueous suspension or slurry (suspension concentrate) contains a synergistic amount of thidiazuron, diuron and surfactants. The aqueous suspension contains surfactants in amounts to obtain a stable suspension or slurry without the use of organic solvents.

Description

[0001] This application incorporates by reference the entirety of US Provisional Patent Application 60 / 835,463, filed August 4, 2006. technical field [0002] The present invention relates to an aqueous composition comprising a synergistic combination of thidiazuron and diuron. The invention also relates to a method for treating plants with an aqueous composition comprising a synergistic mixture of thidiazuron and diuron as a defoliant without using organic solvents. Background technique [0003] Bayer CropScience sells a commercial defoliant product containing thidiazuron and diuron under the trade name GINSTAR. The product is usually applied to cotton plants with the aim of causing the leaves to fall before the cotton is picked. Defoliants are commonly used to control plant growth. When cotton is harvested, defoliants are often applied to the cotton plants to cause the leaves to fall off without adverse effects on the bolls. This method allows the cotton to be harvested...
