Abstract

An access terminal scans for nearby access points and maintains a candidate list of access point with which the access terminal may associate in the event the access terminal's communication with its current access point deteriorates for some reason. This search procedure may be performed in a proactive manner whereby the access terminal repeatedly performs scans and updates its list of candidateaccess points when it is powered on. In some aspects, the search procedure used by the access terminal may be based on a state of the wireless device. In addition, different states of the access terminal may be associated with different optimization criteria.

Description

[0001] Claiming priority under 35 U.S.C. §119 [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application No. 60 / 891,014, Attorney Docket No. 071042P1, filed February 21, 2007, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] In general, the present invention relates to wireless communications, and more particularly, but not exclusively, to search for identifying and selectively associating with wireless nodes, such as access points program. Background technique [0004] A wireless communication system includes a network of two or more wireless devices, where each wireless device can support one or more communication technologies to wirelessly send information to and receive information from another device in the network . Wireless networking can be implemented in a number of ways. For example, some types of wireless networks utilize centralized traffic flow, with a central coordinator handling traffic to and from other wir...
