Embodiment Construction

[0056] Figure 1a with 1b An input device 1 according to a first embodiment of the invention for controlling an external device 2 is shown. In this particular example, the external device 2 is a personal digital assistant or tablet PC type device.

[0057] The input device 1 comprises a socket 3 configured to be mounted on the knuckle 4 of a user's index finger 5 .

[0058] The sleeve 3 is configured to conform to the user's skin, and undergoes elastic deformation according to stretching and relaxation of the user's skin. In this particular example, sleeve 3 is constructed of a soft, conformable material such as natural rubber, silicone, or other elastomeric or similar elastomeric material that encapsulates the electrical components of input device 1 . In some embodiments of the present invention, the sleeve 3 may be made of sensing synthetic rubber or elastomer doped with conductive particles, piezoelectric particles or the like.

Abstract

An input device (1, 25) for a user interface comprises means to monitor movement of a user by mapping and recording deformations of their skin. The input device (1, 25) comprises conformable / reversibly stretchable material for placement onto the skin of a user. A plurality of sensors (30) are mounted on, or embedded in, the stretchable material and arranged to undergo, and track in-plane and out-of-plane deformations corresponding to stretching and flexure of the underlying skin. A signal for controlling another device (26) is then generated, based on the detected movement, gesture or positioning of the user based on the detected deformations. In wearable electronics applications, the other device may be mounted on the same stretchable material. The sensors (30) may be arranged to provideactive feedback, by selectively applying vibrations or pressure to the user's skin.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to input devices for user interfaces. In particular, the invention relates to input devices arranged to monitor the movement of a user by mapping and recording deformations of the user's skin. Background technique [0002] A conventional user interface typically consists of a set of electromechanical switches located on the electronic device to be controlled (eg, a text keypad on a laptop computer, a number pad on a mobile phone, etc.). However, this approach may require a large number of dedicated switches to provide sufficiently flexible user interaction. Portable devices (such as handheld gaming devices, laptop computers, near-eye portable displays (NEDs), mobile phones, personal multimedia players, personal digital assistants, etc.) are constrained by size constraints and / or maximizing other user interface components (such as display screen) size requirements. The need to provide dedicated switches may conflict with...
