Abstract

The method comprises the following steps of: at normal temperature, putting a mixed solution of the activated sludge to be measured and waste water into a sealed reactor; aerating at the bottom of the sealed reactor with purified oxygen, and measuring and recording the carbon dioxide concentration at an exhaust apparatus on the upper part of the sealed reactor; emptying the sealed reactor, and adding the same volume of parallel sample of the activated sludge to be measured and waste water; aerating at the bottom of the sealed reactor with purified nitrogen, and measuring and recording the carbon dioxide concentration at the exhaust apparatus on the upper part of the sealed reactor; respectively computing the carbon dioxide yield during aeration of the purified oxygen and the purified nitrogen within a certain time slot by using an integral of a product of a gas supply amount and the carbon dioxide concentration within a time slot; computing the carbon dioxide yield during organic matter degradation of the activated sludge by using a difference value; and computing the organic matter degrading amount of the activated sludge. The method has the advantage that the organic matter degrading amount of a unit volume of the activated sludge can be directly measured.
