Problems solved by technology

Also, when suturing the urethra to the bladder, the doctor may inadvertently puncture the nearby neurovascular bundle, which can cause incontinence or impotence
The suture may also tear the urethra, thus further complicating the suture

Embodiment Construction

[0040] Figure 1 shows an anastomosis device 2 according to one embodiment of the invention. The device 2 in Figure 1a shown in side view and in Figure 1b is shown in perspective view. Device 2 has a proximal end 4 and a distal end 6 . A flexible elongated shaft 8 extends between proximal and distal ends. The shaft comprises a flexible outer sleeve 10 and a flexible inner sleeve 12 . The inner and outer sleeves can eg be made of silicone rubber or PVC. The inner sleeve 12 is coaxial with the outer sleeve 10 and is able to slide in the lumen of the outer sleeve by pulling the proximal end of the inner sleeve 12 back immobilizing the proximal end of the outer sleeve. The inner surface of the outer sleeve and the outer surface of the inner sleeve can be lubricated, for example with Parelene, in order to facilitate the relative movement of the two sleeves.

[0041] Located at the distal end of the inner sleeve 12 is a bladder anchoring system, which in this embodiment compri...

Abstract

The invention provides a device for urethral anastomosis, for example, following prostatectomy. The device has a flexible slender shaft including a flexible outer sleeve and a flexible inner sleeve inside a lumen of the outer sleeve. A bladder anchoring system anchors the distal end of the inner sleeve inside a urinary bladder, and a urethral anchoring system anchors the outer sleeve in a urethral stump. A ratchet mechanism allows proximal movement of the inner sleeve inside the outer sleeve while preventing distal movement of the inner sleeve inside the outer sleeve. The device is used to urge the urinary bladder towards the internal termination of the urethra to allow anastomosis of the bladder neck to the urethral stump.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to medical devices, and more particularly to such devices for performing the anastomosis of two organs of the body. Background technique [0002] Prostate cancer is the second most common tumor in American men after skin malignancies and the second most common cause of cancer death in men. In a radical prostatectomy, doctors remove all or most of a patient's prostate gland. Since the urethra travels through the prostate, the upper portion of the urethra is removed in this procedure. In order to restore proper urinary function, the bladder and urethra must be reconnected. [0003] Providing such a connection is rather difficult due to the limited working space and the small size of the urethra. The size of the urethra makes it difficult to precisely suture the walls of the urethra to the bladder neck. Sutures tend to cause several problems in recovery, including necrosis of the sutured tissue, a stricture of the urethra...
