Systems and methods provide a stimulation electrode assembly comprising an elongated lead sized and configured to be implanted within an adipose tissue region. The lead includes an electrically conductive portion to apply electrical stimulation to nerve or muscle in the adipose tissue region and at least one expandable anchoring structure deployable from the lead to engage adipose tissue and resist dislodgment and / or migration of the electrically conductive portion within the adipose tissue region.

A system and method for assessing urinary function is provided. The system includes a processor, a tubing assembly forming a first fluid conduit between a first fluid inlet and a first fluid outlet, and an insert member having a channel therethrough and coupled to the first fluid outlet so that fluid flowing through the first fluid conduit may flow through the insert member. The insert member is dimensioned for at least partial insertion into a patient's urethral canal distal of the patient's urethral sphincter, and dimensioned so that, when inserted, it substantially blocks fluid flow into or out of the urethral canal other than through the insert member channel. The system further includes a fluid delivery device electrically coupled to and controlled by the processor, and coupled to the first fluid conduit for pumping fluid therethrough, and a pressure detection system for detecting pressure within the urethral canal distal of the urethral sphincter and providing information correlating to the detected pressure to the processor. The method includes coupling the test module to the control device, inserting the insert member into a patient, infusing fluid through the insert member until the urethral sphincter opens, and measuring pressure within the urethral canal as fluid is infused therein. Also provided is a test module for coupling to a control device to form a system for assessing urinary function.

An insertion device is provided for use in assessing urinary function. The insert device includes an insert member for at least partial insertion into a patient's urethral canal having a length such that it is positioned distal of the urethral sphincter, and having an outer surface at least a portion of which is configured to engage the inner wall of the urethra to substantially prevent fluid flow therebetween. The insert member has a channel therethrough through which fluid from a fluid source can be introduced into the urethral canal. Also provided is a device for introducing fluid into a patient's urethral canal including a hand-sized casing having a fluid conduit therein between a fluid inlet and a fluid source assembly. The device further includes an activation device movable between a first position wherein it does not obstruct the fluid conduit and a second position wherein it does obstruct the fluid conduit. The diameter of the net of the reticulated unit is less than or equal to 0.5 mm, and the size of the mesh of the reticulated unit is more than or equal to 1 mm2 and less than or equal to the maximum mesh size determined by at least either the excretions of the animal accommodated in the accommodating unit or a predetermined object used for accommodating the animal in the accommodating unit.

The present invention relates to high-throughput mammalian and medium-throughput oocyte-based electrophysiological assays for identifying human TRPML3 modulators, preferably TRPML3 enhancers. Compounds that modulate TRPML3 function in the assay are expected to affect salty taste in humans. The inventive electrophysiological assays, such as the two-electrode voltage-clamp technique, facilitate the identification of compounds which specifically modulate human TRPML3. The assays of the invention provide a robust screen useful to detect compounds that facilitate (enhance) or inhibit TRPML3 function. Compounds that enhance or block TRPML3 channel activity should thereby modulate salty taste. In addition, these compounds may be used to regulate sodium excretion, urinary output and other biological functions relating to sodium levels. This invention relates to the elucidation that TRPML3 is involved in salty taste perception in primates including humans and likely other mammals (given the significance of sodium and other ions to physiological functions and conditions this phenotype is likely strongly conserved in different animals). The TRPML3 gene also modulates one or more of sodium metabolism, sodium excretion, blood pressure, fluid retention, cardiac function and urinary functions such as urine production and excretion. The device is a mechanical valve for a natural or artificial bladder, and includes a longitudinally extended housing, preferably attached to the abdominal wall. Preferably a bladder anti-prolapse skirt is attached between the bladder and control valve, and the skirt may repair or replace the bladder. The device provides a urine flow channel that passes through the valve from one side to the other of a valve seat where an actuator with a mating stopper is controlled to open and close the valve at the election of the user with an external controller.
