The method comprises the following steps of: reading self software version numbers when the set top box is delivered and started at first time, and backing the self software version numbers to a nonvolatile memory; after the set top box is started every time or is upgraded completely, reading the self software version numbers, and comparing with the backed original software version number, if the software version numbers are inconsistent, indicating that software needs to be upgraded, feeding upgrading information to a broadcasting and television front-end system by the set top box through a network; analyzing, storing and displaying the received upgrading information in a server by the broadcasting and television front-end system, transmitting a processing message to the set top box; and after the set top box receives the processing message, writing newly upgraded software version numbers into the nonvolatile memory.
