Abstract

The present invention discloses a magnetic resonance (MR) imaging system (100) comprising a housing (102) having first and second openings (110, 116) and first and second solenoid coils (160, 116) 150), the first and second solenoid coils (160, 150) generate a magnetic field suitable for imaging within a region of interest (ROI). The first and second solenoid coils (160, 150) have a common longitudinal axis (LA). The first and second openings (110, 116) are located on opposite sides of the housing (102) along the longitudinal axis (LA). The first solenoid coil (160) has a different inner diameter than the second solenoid coil (150) and is positioned adjacent the first opening (110). The second solenoid coil (150) is positioned adjacent the second opening (116). Thus, the system provides improved access to the patient during imaging, eg, for MR-guided interventional procedures.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 745,842, filed December 26, 2012, which is hereby incorporated by reference into this application. field of invention [0003] The present system relates to a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, and more particularly, to an accessible MRI system suitable for MR-guided interventional (MRGI) procedures and methods of operation thereof. Background technique [0004] Typically, MRGI procedures rely on a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system to obtain real-time images of parts of the patient's body within a region of interest (ROI) comprising the scan region of the MRI system. Then, using the real-time images, surgeons can perform interventional procedures with improved accuracy. With regard to MRI systems, these systems generally contain closed and open systems. Both systems typically include a main coil (eg, a superconducting coil) co...
