According to the authentication method and apparatus of the present invention, AAA (Authentication, Authorization and Accounting) authentication and SSL VPN (Secure Sockets Layer Virtual Private Network) short message authentication are separated from each other, so that the authentication method of the invention is different from a method in the prior art according to which SSL VPN short message authentication is dependent on AAA authentication. Compared with the prior art, the authentication method and apparatus of the present invention enable the SSL VPN short message authentication to naturally support the cooperation of any authentication modes.
