The purifying component (150) can change the area thereof covering the air intake (121) of the indoor unit by the retraction and extension of the free end (150-2). The control method comprises: acquiring a trigger signal of an air conditioner for entering into a purification mode (S1002); detecting an air pollution parameter of a working environment of an indoor unit (100) of the air conditioner, and determining a purification level corresponding to the air pollution parameter (S1003); and controlling the driving device (140) to drive the free end (150-2) to a designated position for the purification level in order to purify the air flow entering the indoor unit (100) (S1006).
