The firmware upgrade method of the optical module comprises the following steps: receiving a firmware upgrade request;responding to the firmware upgrade request to back up running parameters of the optical module and entering a program upgrade area preset in a storage area and running firmware upgrade codes; and jumping to a main program area in the storage area, running updated firmware codes, and loading running parameters of backup through running of firmware codes in order to generate configuration parametersto control running of the optical module. With the optical module and the firmware upgrade method thereof provided by the invention, the optical module is not rebooted during firmware upgrade in order to preclude communication services from interruption.
