Embodiment Construction

[0044] Before describing the exemplary embodiments in detail, it should be noted that these embodiments reside primarily in a combination of apparatus components and processing steps that involve: wireless devices to extend the coverage and quality of cellular service available to surrounding wireless devices in the communication network. By enhancing the capabilities of certain wireless devices to allow selected wireless devices to perform preselected base station functions, the methods and apparatus disclosed herein advantageously provide connectivity to maintain awareness of wireless devices that may move out of coverage of conventionally deployed base stations. End-to-end service. This may be due to damage or malfunction of the RAN equipment due to, for example, a disaster or other circumstances. Furthermore, advantageously, the methods and apparatus disclosed herein can enhance the capacity of conventionally deployed RANs according to load fluctuations in the number of u...

Abstract

A method, wireless device, and network node configured to enable a wireless device to serve as a base station to at least one other wireless device in a communications network, the wireless device being configured to perform predetermined base station functions. The method includes determining a condition triggering a need to provide the predetermined base station functions to the at least one other wireless device, notifying a network node in the communications network that the wireless device is available to provide the predetermined base station functions, receiving approval from the network node to provide the predetermined base station functions, and providing the predetermined base station functions to the at least one other wireless device.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to wireless communications, and more particularly to extending the coverage and quality of cellular service available to surrounding wireless devices in a communication network by selecting a particular wireless device to act as a base station and perform preselected base station functions for other wireless devices. Background technique [0002] Modern Radio Access Networks (RANs) are designed to provide high bit-rate mobile access to various core networks (CNs) such as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) based on the Internet Protocol (IP) suite, packet-switched data network (PDN) and enterprise network. The interface between RAN and CN is usually designed and standardized in such a way that it facilitates the provision of high-quality end-to-end services to various wireless devices belonging to different classes characterized by various UE capabilities. These UE capabilities include supported peak data rates,...
