Problems solved by technology

[0008] The problem with known wireless networks is that if the network is open to any wireless terminal, security is compromised, but if access is restricted to a known set of wireless terminals, flexibility is sacrificed

Embodiment Construction

[0023] figure 1 The shown base station oriented wireless network comprises a plurality of private wireless terminals 102, public wireless terminals 103, and a base station 108, optionally connected to a fixed telecommunication network such as the PSTN for exchanging data with the network. The wireless terminals 102, 103 include a transceiver 106 that communicates with each other through a base station 108 that includes the transceiver 106 and a controller 110 configured to provide means for performing base station functions. Controller 110 may be co-located with transceiver 106 or remote therefrom and connected by a landline connection. Various devices can be configured as the wireless terminal 102, such as a portable computer, a printer, or a measurement device. In addition to the transceiver 106, each wireless terminal also includes application-specific modules 104, implementing the required functionality in order to operate in the wireless network.

Abstract

A method of operating a wireless network comprising a plurality of public wireless terminals and private wireless terminals, and optionally a base station, uses a transmission frame including a control section which may schedule encrypted communication between private wireless terminals and unencrypted communication between public wireless terminals and between public and private wireless terminals. Wireless terminals may join the network as private or public terminals.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a private wireless network for communication between a plurality of wireless terminals, both public and private, which terminals can freely join and leave the network at any time. The network can be configured so that all wireless terminals communicate through a base station, or so that devices communicate directly with each other. Background technique [0002] Wireless networks are intended to provide a flexible and cost-effective alternative to wired networks, such as local area networks (LANs). The advantage of wireless over fixed networks is that new networks are easily created and new devices called wireless terminals can easily join the network. Some wireless networking standards already exist, such as IEEE 802.11 in the USA and HIPERLAN in Europe, and others are under development, such as Wireless Asynchronous Transfer Mode (EATM). These standards define the format of the transmission frame, which can realize c...
