Embodiment Construction

[0032]Preferred embodiments of the present invention provide a proxy switch and a method of using it in a mobile communication network. The proxy switch is preferably located between the MSC and the BS, "transparent" to other components, that is, no BS or MSC needs to know about the proxy switch or need to change their functional behavior due to the presence of the proxy switch. Instead, the BS and MSC operate as usual, ignoring the presence of proxy switches.

[0033] Of all the benefits, proxy switches may relieve congestion within mobile networks. For example, a proxy switch might be used to (a) siphon MS-originated communication traffic from the network before it enters the MSC (b) route the siphoned traffic to the desired destination through an alternate network, such as packet-based The internet. Similarly, a proxy switch may be used to pass traffic from an alternate network to the MS. Thereby, expensive MSC and PSTN resources may be avoided, and proxy switches may be...

Abstract

A proxy switch, communication method for use in a mobile network are described. A proxy switch is deployed between a base station subsystem and a mobile station center. It receives signaling messages and either retransmits them, blocks them, converts them, or siphons them to an alternative network. Besides providing an ability to offload offload mobile traffic it provides a platform for new communication services. A mobile communications network has at least one BS, at least one MS, at least one MSC, and at least one switch in communication with at least one of the BSs and the at least one of the MSCs. A BS is in trunk line communication with the switch and the trunk line communication is organized as bearer circuits, each bearer circuit identifiable with a circuit identification code (CIC). The switch receives signaling messages from the the BS and determines if a call corresponding to the signaling message is to be handled by the alternative communication network. If so, the switch assigns a CIC for a bearer circuit for the call and communicates the CIC to the BS. Thereafter, the switch receives information on the CIC-identified bearer circuit and forwards the received information to the alternative network.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to wireless communications and, more particularly, to the use of proxy switches within mobile communications networks to improve the capacity and cost performance of communications networks and provide a platform for new mobile services. Background technique [0002] All modern mobile communication systems have a hierarchical structure in which the geographic: coverage area is divided into many smaller geographical areas called "cells". Referring to FIG. 1, each cell is preferably served by one or more base transceiver stations (BTS) 102a-n. These BTSs 102a-n are coupled to a base station controller (BSC) 106a by a fixed link 104a. The BTS and BSC are sometimes collectively referred to as Base Station Subsystem (BS) 107 . Several BSCs 106a-n may be coupled to a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) 110 by fixed links 108a-n. [0003] MSC 110 communicates with Telephone Network (PSTN) 120 via a trunk set as a local transition sw...
