Problems solved by technology

In addition, overly wet carpets may allow surface stains to appear or reappear as underlying soil or stains migrate from the underside of the carpet to the surface
Additionally, since wetting, agitation, and vacuuming are done sequentially, removers are generally limited to one direction of operation
Therefore, the remover is difficult to maneuver in some environments, namely in complex carpet layouts

Embodiment Construction

[0024] The invention relates both to a method of cleaning surfaces and to an apparatus for carrying out the method. In a broad sense as will be described hereinafter, the cleaning method according to the present invention is like a wet cloth wiping operation in which dirt is transferred from the surface to the wet cloth.

[0025] In particular, the cleaning method according to the present invention uses a rotating cleaning medium which is wetted after wiping the surface to be cleaned, followed immediately by a removal step in order to remove part of the cleaning fluid and some dirt from the cleaning medium, and Wipe the surface again - the process cycles and repeats.

[0026] In a preferred operation, a part of the cleaning medium is wetted with the cleaning solution, while another part is removed to remove the dirt and cleaning solution from it, while still another part is used to wipe the surface to transfer the dirt from the surface to the cleaning on the medium. The proc...

Abstract

The invention discloses an apparatus and method for cleaning fabrics, floor coverings, and bare floor surfaces utilizing a soil transfer cleaning medium. A method of mechanically removing soil from a surface (25) intended to be cleaned includes the steps of successively and repeatedly: wetting a portion of a cleaning medium (40) with a cleaning liquid (13); extracting any soil and at least some of the cleaning liquid (13) from the previously wetted portion of the cleaning medium (40); and wiping the surface (25) intended to be cleaned with the portion of the cleaning medium (40) so as to transfer soil from the surface (25) intended to be cleaned to the cleaning medium (40). Portable and vehicle-based devices may be utilized to practice the method of cleaning.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to surface care or finishing machines, and more particularly to those machines that use one or more surface care or finish devices or tools for floor cleaning tasks. Background technique [0002] Typically, proper carpet care includes vacuuming and regular cleaning to remove dirt by methods such as hotwater extraction, washing, bonnet cleaning, foam cleaning, and the like. Some soils are easily caught between the carpet fibers, while other soils are held onto the carpet fibers by electrostatic forces, van der Waals forces, or oil bonds. Still other soils are mechanically trapped by the carpet fibers. Regular vacuuming is necessary when removing loose, fiber-damaging dirt. Vacuum cleaning maintains the appearance of the carpet and keeps the accumulated dirt at an acceptable level. Vacuuming removes only particulate soil and some unbonded or loosely bonded surface dirt; therefore, other cleaning methods are need...
