The invention discloses an ONU automatic upgrading method in an EPON access system, which includes steps that a webmaster computer sends automatic upgrading enabling configuration parameter and instruction; a master control disc stores the configuration parameter and sends the configuration parameter to designed line cards; each line card modifies and stores the configuration parameter; the master control disc unloads upgrading file and stores the upgrading file to local buffer memory; the master control disc notices on-line line cards or AC 16 disc to unload and store the upgrading file; the line card store the upgrading file to the local buffer memory; and designed ONU obtains the upgrading file from the line cards or the AC 16 disc, writes in FLASH of the ONU to complete upgrading and reporting the upgrading result. The invention can once realize automatic upgrading of all ONUs under the line cards, even if the OUNs are not on-line when configuring , the invention can realize upgrading for the ONUs after the OUNs are on-line next, thereby increasing operation maintain efficiency in the EPON access system.
