[0029] One embodiment of the RLF recovery mechanism considered herein focuses on the case of handover failure. Handover is an important mechanism for maintaining continuity of user connections. In LTE, robust and fast handover is a challenging task. One reason is that in an LTE system, a handover between two eNBs implies a complete disconnection of the user terminal to its serving cell before the user terminal attempts to access a neighboring cell. In other words, hard handover is used in 3GPP LTE, unlike the first release of 3GPP UMTS which implements soft handover. Another reason is the distributed architecture of the LTE system, which requires coordination between neighboring eNBs.
