Embodiment 1

[0037] The following experiment utilized aqueous reaction conditions to prepare N-isopropylmethacrylamide (IPMA):

[0038] Into a 250 ml three-necked resin flask equipped with a mechanical stirrer, condenser and thermocouple was added 32 grams of water. The water was cooled to 5-9°C with an ice bath. To the cooled water was slowly added 6 g of isopropylamine with stirring.

[0039] To the cooled, stirred isopropylamine solution was added the following components simultaneously via two separate syringe pumps: 1) methacrylic anhydride (16.53 g, 94% purity), and 2) sodium hydroxide (8.12 grams) of 50wt.% aqueous solution. The methacrylic anhydride and sodium hydroxide solutions were each added over a period of 1 hour while maintaining the reaction temperature below 30°C. During this time, a precipitate formed in the reaction mixture. After all reagents had been added, the reaction mixture was allowed to stir for an additional 1 hour, then the reactor contents were filtered. ...

Abstract

The present invention provides a process for preparing N-alkyl(alk)acrylamides. In a general embodiment, the present invention provides a process for the preparation of N-alkyl(alk)acrylamides comprising providing an aqueous solution comprising N-alkylamines and adding a base and (alk)acrylic anhydride to the aqueous solution to form precipitated N-alkyl(alk)acrylamides.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates generally to N-alkyl(alk)acrylamides. More specifically, the present invention relates to methods of making N-alkyl(alk)acrylamides and methods of using the N-alkyl(alk)acrylamides. Background technique [0002] Anhydrides have relatively high reactivity in the presence of nucleophiles such as amines, hydroxides, alkoxides, and the like. The reaction of acrylic and (meth)acrylic anhydrides with nucleophiles such as amines yields the corresponding acrylic acid or (meth)acrylic acid, and as a subsequent affinity addition product to another monomer. The resulting N-alkyl(alk)acrylamides can be used as building blocks for polymeric gas hydrate inhibitors. However, these reactions present problems related to final product purification and side reaction control. Contents of the invention [0003] The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of N-alkyl(alk)acrylamides. In a general embodiment, the prese...
