The identity authentication method comprises the steps of reading information of an identity card of a VTM user, shooting the face of the VTM user, and generating face head-portrait information of the VTM user; comparing head-portrait information in the identity card with the face head-portrait information of the VTM user, and generating a similarity value obtained by comparing the head-portrait information in the identity card with the face head-portrait information of the VTM user; comparing the similarity value with a preset threshold value, wherein if the similarity value is greater than or equal to the preset threshold value, the VTM user passes through identity authentication, and if the similarity value is less than the preset threshold value, the VTM user does not pass through identity authentication. According to the identity authentication method, by comparing the head-portrait information in the user identity card with the user face head-portrait information collected by a camera, follow-up financial services are provided for the user under the circumstance that the user consists with the identity card; compared with a method that whether the user is legal or not is judged only through artificial recognition by a teller in the prior art, the identity authentication method is safer and more reliable.
