The invention discloses an automatic question answering method and device. One specific embodiment of the method comprises the following steps of receiving question information which is input by a user; carrying out classification processing on the question information to obtain a type to which the question information belongs; judging whether the type to which the question information belongs is the same as the type to which the question information in a history problem information set belongs; and if yes, matching a question word included in the question information and a question word in a question word answer set which is set for the type of the question information, and selecting an answer corresponding to the successfully matched question word in the question word answer set as an alternative answer used for output after matching successfully, wherein the question word answer set includes the question words and the answers corresponding to the question words. Through the embodiments, the accuracy for automatic question answering is improved.
