The application provides a compression method and device of an image file in an image interchange format. The method comprises the following steps: acquiring continuous multi-frame images in the imagefile in the image interchange format, and the playing duration of each frame of image; determining continuous multi-frame to-be-compressed images with similarity greater than a preset value from continuous multi-frame images; selecting the target number of frame to-be-compressed images from multi-frame to-be-compressed images as the compressed target image; adjusting the total playing duration ofthe target image as the total playing duration corresponding to multi-frame to-be-compressed images; and synthesizing the uncompressed image and the playing duration corresponding to each frame uncompressed image, the target image and the adjusted playing duration corresponding to the target image into the compressed image file with the image interchange format. In the premise of not influencingthe playing quality, the storage space required by the image file in the image interchange format is reduced.
