Embodiment Construction

[0021] Figure 1 shows an optimized optical system of 5 channels 8a, 8b, 8c, 8d and 8e using wavelength division multiplexing according to the prior art. The system may be, for example, part of a telephone system. In this optical system, the optical amplifier 1 has a constant output power. The amplifier is controlled by the pump laser 2 . Fiber 6 leads to amplifier 1 from other nodes in the system, and fiber 7 leads from amplifier 1 to other nodes in the system. In fibers 6, 7 channels can be added or dropped. In the example shown, four channels 8 a , 8 c , 8 d , 8 e entering the amplifier 1 through the first fiber 6 are amplified and exit in the second fiber 7 . Another channel 8b is added from transmitter 3 thereafter. All channels 8a, 8b, 8c, 8d, 8e are of the same intensity and a selected channel 8d can be read out with a filter 4 which selects a specific wavelength of the selected channel 8d and sent to the receiver 5. All channels 8a, 8b, 8c, 8d, 8e will be reduced i...

Abstract

The present invention relates to an optical system comprising firstly an optical amplifier (11), which comprises at least one input and at least one output, secondly a control circuit for regulating the output power of the amplifier (11) with the aid of a feed-forward process demand signal (PF), said control circuit comprising a feed-forward block (14) and a first means (13) for tapping light from the input of the amplifier (11 ) to the feed-forward block (14). According to the invention, the feed-forward block (14) is arranged to measure the total optical input power.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a system with an optical amplifier, and in particular to a system for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) of transmitted signals, and to a control method in such a system. Background technique [0002] Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is a technique that uses different separate wavelengths of light to allow a large number of optical signals to be transmitted through an optical fiber. In this way, the information carrying capacity can be significantly increased. This capability depends on the bandwidth of the fiber, the number of wavelength channels used, and how close these wavelength channels are to each other in practice. Signals at each wavelength travel through the fiber independently of other signals, so each signal represents a discrete channel of large bandwidth. [0003] When a signal is sent over a long distance, the signal must be regenerated or amplified at repeated intervals. In the latter soluti...
