Abstract

The present invention relates to estimating the speech quality obtained with a radio channel (37) for speech communication between a mobile station (MS1) and a base station (BS1) in a digital radio telephony system (3) (PLMN), wherewith the speech quality estimation achieved coincides to the greatest possible extent with the user's subjective estimation of the speech quality. A bit error rate associated with the radio channel (37) is measured. A fading frequency associated with the radio channel (37) is also measured. According to the invention, the speech quality is estimated with the aid of the measured bit error content and also with the aid of the measured fading frequency.

Description

field of invention

[0001] The present invention relates to methods and devices in the field of wireless communications, and more particularly to those parts of the field concerned with speech quality estimation when speech communications are carried out using wireless channels. Background of the invention

[0002] A conventional public land mobile network (PLMN) (or, in other words, a cellular radiotelephone system) comprises a land system and one or more mobile stations. A land system generally comprises at least one Mobile Services Switching Center (MSC) connected to one or more radio base stations (hereinafter, simply referred to as base stations). One or more of the MSCs are usually connected to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), in other words, the conventional non-mobile telephone system. Each base station serves a geographical area called a cell. Mobile stations located within the cell are able to communicate with the base station via a radio interface. ...
