Embodiment Construction

[0013] Referring now to FIG. 1, there is shown a block diagram of a wireless communication device, generally indicated by numeral 10, in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. Device 10 includes circuitry 12 , user interface 14 , transceiver 16 , and control circuitry 18 . As shown in this figure, device 10 is implemented as a cellular telephone. However, the present invention is not limited to cellular telephones, but may be implemented in other communication devices. For example, satellite phones, personal communications services (PCS) devices, personal data assistants (PDAs), palmtop computers, and the like are also contemplated by the present invention.

[0014] Circuitry 12 includes synthesizer 20 , memory 22 , and system interface 24 . Synthesizer 20 may be, for example, a Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) synthesizer that synthesizes audio files for playback to a user of device 10 . These audio files include, but are not limited to: polyph...

Abstract

The present invention provides a system and method of selecting a complementary multi-media effect for activation in a wireless communications device (10). A user or service provider creates a picklist comprising a list of complementary multi-media effects available to the wireless communications device (10). A complementary multi-media effect from the picklist is automatically selected for activation upon the receipt of a predetermined event, such as an incoming call. Thereafter, the selected complementary multi-media effect is automatically changed to a new complementary multi-media effect that is also selected from the picklist. Upon the receipt of a subsequent predetermined event, the new selected complementary multi-media effect is activated. A processor (40) within the wireless communications device (10) or in an external network (50) may perform selection of the complementary multi-media effects from the picklist.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] The present invention relates generally to wireless communication devices, and more particularly, the present invention relates to the activation of one or more additional multimedia effects available to wireless communication devices. [0002] Consumers often inquire about innovative features and new functionality when deciding whether to purchase a wireless communication device. A particularly popular feature allows the user to assign a melodic ring tone to a particular remote party terminal. When receiving an incoming call, the user can identify the calling user simply by listening to the ring tone. Also popular is the ability to play games, watch images, videos, and define various vibration and lighting patterns. [0003] Of course, consumers notice that features or functions that were once new and innovative often quickly become obsolete. As a result, manufacturers and service providers often strive to keep pace with consumer demands....
