Problems solved by technology

For example, the use of one coating component (such as porous inorganic metal oxide) for anti-reflection and another (such as surfactant) for anti-fog is too complex and expensive
Other issues with surfactant / solid particle dispersions relate to formulation instability over time, which can adversely affect the optical properties of the product

Embodiment 1

[0046] The ability to suppress fogging and glare using the coating compositions of the present invention is demonstrated. Coating compositions are formed from a variety of different water-soluble organic polymers. One such water-soluble organic polymer is Bermocoll E 230FQ, which is ethyl hydroxyethylcellulose available from Akzo Nobel, Stamford Connecticut. Another water-soluble organic polymer is Hydagen CMF, which is chitosan glycolate available from Cognis Corporation, Ambler, Pennsylvania. Another water-soluble organic polymer is Crodacel QM, which is PG-hydroxyethylcellulose cocodiammonium, a quaternary ammonium cellulose salt available from Croda, Inc., Parsipany, New Jersey. Finally, another water-soluble organic polymer is KlucelEF, which is hydroxypropylcellulose available from Hercules, Inc., Wilmington, Delaware.

[0047] The active percentages of the ingredients in each coating composition (balance in each sample being water) are indicated in Table 1 below.

Abstract

A coating composition that is incorporated into a facemask to reduce fogging and glare is provided. For example, in one embodiment, the facemask contains a shield or visor formed from a transparent substrate having at least one surface applied with the coating composition of the present invention. The present inventors have unexpectedly discovered that one or more water-soluble organic polymers, such as ethyl hydroxyethylcellulose, may be utilized as a principal component of the coating composition to reduce fogging and glare in a simple, yet effective manner.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] The use of protective face coverings has become standard in many healthcare and other related activities. The main purpose of a face mask is to filter harmful substances from inhaled and exhaled air. However, medical masks can also be used to protect the wearer from fluids. Accordingly, these shields may include attached clear plastic goggles to protect the eyes from liquid splashes. Alternatively, a separate clear face shield can also be worn in conjunction with the filter cover. [0002] A continuing problem with the use of face shields or protective masks with attached goggles in both medical and industrial applications is fogging of the goggles or shields. Warm moist air exhaled by the wearer will condense on relatively cool surfaces that are in close proximity to the user's nose or mouth. Condensation droplets will fog or cloud glasses, face shields and other protective shielding, and scientific equipment such as endoscopes and micro...
