Problems solved by technology

While electronic power supply equipment on the market can generate output currents as high as 2.5 times the nominal current for short periods of time (i.e., as short as 4 seconds), these low currents are insufficient to reliably and safely magnetically trip a circuit breaker

Embodiment Construction

[0032] figure 1 An exemplary power supply system is shown comprising an electronic power supply device 10 to which a low-voltage load, symbolized by a resistor 30 , is connected at output terminals 20 and 21 . The resistance of the feeder to the low-voltage load 30 is considered a resistor 40 . Furthermore, a protective device, in this example an electromagnetic circuit breaker 50 , is connected in series with said low-voltage load 30 . For example, the electronic power supply unit 10 provides a DC voltage u of 24 V at the output terminals 20 , 21 a . Although figure 1 Only one low-voltage load 30 is connected to the electronic power supply device 10, but obviously a plurality of loads may also preferably be connected in parallel to the electronic power supply device 10. A separate circuit breaker can be assigned to each load.

[0033] The electronic power supply device 10 can be via the line voltage u y powered by a switched-mode power supply. Power supply device 10 ge...

Abstract

The invention relates to an electronic power supply device, particularly a switched-mode power supply, for supplying power to a low-voltage load protected by a protective device, and to a method therefor. The invention also relates to a device for protecting a low-voltage load against an excess current and to an auxiliary power supply device for use with such a protection device. The conceptual core of the invention can be seen in providing measures which ensure that after a fault has been detected, for example a short circuit at the output, a current is supplied for a short period, for example 15 ms, which is of such a magnitude that a protective device can be reliably and quickly tripped. The period for this is selected in such a manner that electronic components, connected loads and feedlines are not damaged and destroyed.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to an electronic power supply device, in particular a switched-mode power supply, for supplying a low-voltage load protected by a protection device, and to a method therefor. The invention also relates to a device for protecting low-voltage loads from overcurrents, and an auxiliary power supply device for use with such a protection device. Background technique [0002] In industrial equipment, low-voltage loads such as controllers, amplifiers, etc. are preferably supplied with 24 volts DC, which is not harmful to humans. Suitable power supplies providing this DC voltage can supply output currents of 20 amps and higher. At such high currents, protective devices such as fuses or circuit breakers must be connected in series with the individual loads in order to protect these loads and especially the feeders against thermal overload and short-circuit currents. In order to reliably trip a circuit breaker magnetically in the event of ...
