Exploding Projectile

Abstract

A projectile for conventional firearms includes a cavity with a conical or ogive surface, and an internal cavity into which is disposed an explosive material, such as a low explosive material. The tip of the projectile includes a reservoir into which is disposed an initiator, detonator, or primer material.According to some embodiments a pin is disposed ahead of the initiator, while according to others, deformable material is placed ahead of the initiator, so that impact of the projectile onto a target shocks the initiator into deflagration, which propagates into the explosive material, to fragment the projectile or for pyrotechnic effects, or both.According to additional embodiments, the explosive may be a binary explosive activated by common substances available separately to a user, so that the product itself may be legally sold, shipped, and stored in a safe and stable state and thus incur fewer regulatory burdens.
