[0050]The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a railcar body. The method capitalizes on the precision of laser-cut sheet and plate components to use details cut into such sheet and plate components to precisely locate them with respect to each other. The sheet and plate components are locked into place with these laser-cut details so that no external tooling is required to hold the assembled components. They are then robotically laser welded with low heat so that the sheet and plate components do not deform, allowing again to avoid the use of tooling. When laser welding the plate components, only the butt type of weld is used. When laser welding the sheet components, only the spot type of weld is used.
