A wireless packet data communications system that includes a number of modem pool transceivers (MPTs), one or more modem pool controllers (MPCs), and one or more servers. Each MPT receives and processes data packets to generate a modulated signal (e.g., a CDMA spread spectrum signal) suitable for transmission over a terrestrial communications link. Each MPC provides call related processing for one or more MPTs. The servers couple to the MPTs and MPCs via an Internet Protocol (IP) back-bone and provide management of the communications system. The IP back-bone further interconnects the MPTs with one or more data networks and includes a number of routers that route data packets between the data networks and the MPTs. Each MPT can couple to two or more routers for redundancy. Each MPT is operated as an element in an IP network and is associated with an IP address that identifies the MPT. An improved method and system for accessing wireless data services that reduce messaging and enable roaming subscribers to access data services are described. A wireless communication system in accordance with the present invention includes at least a service control point and a gateway system (e.g., a Gateway Generalized Packet Radio Service Serving Node (GGSN)) that is coupled to a data network. To obtain access to data services, a wireless subscriber unit establishes communication with a gateway system and requests data services from the gateway system. In response to the request, the gateway system queries the service control point regarding authorized data services for the subscriber unit. If the gateway system receives a negative reply from the service control point, then the gateway system denies access to the data services by the subscriber Unit. However, if the gateway system receives a positive reply from the service control point, then the gateway system enables access to the data services by the subscriber unit. In a preferred embodiment, the gateway system tracks the requested data services utilizing pre-defined resource units. In one embodiment, the gateway system tracks service utilization by periodically querying and receiving a reply from the service control point after each pre-defined resource unit has been utilized. In this embodiment, the service control point updates an account balance of remaining resource units in response to receiving the queries and informs the gateway system when data access should be denied.

Systems and methods for distribution of wireless network access using a common media access control (MAC) architecture. In one embodiment, a platform architecture may be provided for high speed Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) service termination using a common MAC architecture and router functionality, e.g., an integrated router and firewall service may be provided to a local WLAN network, leveraging a common orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based MAC architecture for both the BWA and WLAN functionality. The sending rate adjustment method comprises the steps that a TCP connection agent entity acquires wireless channel state information; the TCP connection agent entity adjusts retransmission time out (RTO) parameters according to the wireless channel state information, the data sending rate of the TCP connection agent entity is reduced, and a device sending data to the TCP connection agent entity is notified to reduce the data sending rate. A mobile station attempts to access wireless data services such as WAP applications via a data call, by first transmitting a session request to a wireless network, where the session request identifies an initial data bearer that should be used to establish the session.
