[0013] The present disclosure includes methods and apparatus for ensuring that the gain setting in the receiver portion of a transceiver is set low enough to prevent overshoot or distortion during initial timing and frequency acquisition. The method and apparatus set receiver gain by measuring the power values of received symbols in a signal that occur within the same time period as the initial acquisition pilot symbol period. This gain is adjusted unidirectionally (i.e., reduced) to process the highest power symbols received, thus ensuring full or maximum power for the initially acquired pilot symbols without overshooting or distortion by the amplifier. The gain can be appropriately set sufficiently low.
