Problems solved by technology

The inherent problem with these solutions is that even if coax or phone lines already exist in the premises, those lines may not have been connected to the correct point, or be a topology that is difficult for the technology to handle
Most of these technologies also share bandwidth with other houses (e.g. up to 4 house power lines on one power transformer) and currently lack reliability

Embodiment Construction

[0043] The present invention is based on IEEE802.15.3b MAC supporting TDMA service (the beacon is at the beginning of the superframe, and the transmission time is allocated in the superframe). IEEE 802.15b was designed for individuals and is therefore "simpler" than those technologies designed for LANs or Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs). Although other TDMA MACs (eg, IEEE802.16) can be used, there has been no attempt in the prior art to dynamically allocate CTA length purely based on the traffic characteristics available to the MAC layer. While IEEE 802.16 is designed for Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks (WMANs) and is used for Internet distribution to service subscribers. IEEE 802.16 includes many features and options that enable service providers to customize their networks. Although example embodiments of the present invention are described with respect to IEEE 802.15.3b, the concepts are equally applicable to IEEE 802.16 embodiments. There are slightly more headers ...

Abstract

A method and apparatus are described for managing acknowledgements, including identifying data packets and acknowledgements with a connection, determining which of the acknowledgements can be eliminated, replacing the acknowledgements that can be eliminated with a single acknowledgement and transmitting the single acknowledgement. An alternative method and apparatus are described for managing acknowledgements, including receiving a data segment, keeping track of connections, determining if there are enough data segments for a pre-determined number of channel time allocations and generating the acknowledgments for a selected connection if there are enough data segments for the pre-determined number of channel time allocations.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the distribution of compressed multimedia / video from a host device, such as a Set Top Box (STB), to a remote device, such as the STB, in a wireless video distribution system. Background technique [0002] For cable video services, a particular video program is typically broadcast on cable in a frequency band dedicated to that particular video program. Any television in the house can be tuned to any particular program by tuning to that frequency. In the case of newer television services (eg, satellite television distribution, Internet television distribution), programs are tuned in the master STB and then distributed to remote STBs over the home network. In many cases, a home network (or home distribution system) needs to be installed. While wire (coax, twisted pair, etc.) is reliable, it is expensive to install, and homeowners may not want installers drilling through walls for installation. Therefore, manufacturers a...
