Method for controlling a data stream in a wireless network

A method is provided for transmitting data packets from a source device in a wireless network. The source device receives a channel time allocation identifying the source device as assigned to transmit and a destination device as assigned to listen during the channel time allocation. If the source device has any primary data to send to the destination device, it will do so during the channel time allocation. If time remains in the channel time allocation once the primary data (if any) has been sent to the destination device, the source device will determine whether it has any secondary data to send to a secondary device. If so, the source device will determine whether the secondary device will be listening during the channel time allocation. If the secondary device will be listening, the source device then sends the secondary data to the secondary device during the channel time allocation.

In the WPAN environment synchronized by a synchronization signal broadcasted from a coordinator, the channel time allocation method includes transmitting a channel time allocation request command corresponding to a property of an application data to be transmitted to the coordinator by any one of devices linked to the WPAN, and the coordinator allocating the channel time, inserting information of the allocated channel time to the synchronization signal, and broadcasting the synchronization signal to the devices. Accordingly, the channel time is allocated to fit for the property of the VBR stream data such as the MPEG-2 video so that the QoS of the VBR stream is provided. At the same time, reliability of the transmission of I frame is enhanced so that success rate of decoding the frame is increased.

The master device sends a polling frame (240) to a current destination slave device (602) and a current polled slave device (603). However, if no poll acknowledgement frame is received, the master device waits for a set duration then sets the current destination device address to be equal to a new destination device address, sets the current polled device address to be equal to a new polled slave device address, and sets a current payload to be equal to a new payload. This can be repeated until a channel time allocation ends.
