Menu management mechanism that displays menu items based on multiple heuristic factors

The mechanisms of the present invention provide comprehensive heuristic menu arrangement control by providing several discrete, yet complementary, features. One feature is automatic menu arrangement for both fixed and variable content menus based on a combination of frequency of selection and recency of selection. Another feature is the consideration of time of day for menu arrangement. Time of day is used in two different ways. First, time of day is used as a heuristic factor (i.e., in the same way as recency and frequency) to affect the automatic arrangement of menu items. The second time of day feature allows the user to affect the order that certain menu items are presented during a user specified time period.

Digital servo control system for use in disk drives

A digital servo control system for disk drives is an "embedded" system-one in which servo control information is embedded on the same disk surface as the user data. In contrast to known embedded-servo systems in which a space-consuming series of many dibit pairs is present, the present system provides only a single dibit pair in a fractional positional error (PESF) area. Thus, the disk drive's read head encounters only a single dibit pair per sample period (or per data sector), thus saving valuable disk space that may be used for user data. Various pre-processing methods may be provided so as to pre-process the measurement derived from the single dibit pair per sample period (or data sector), so as to compensate for non-ideal characteristics of the dibit measurement. The system thus provides an accurate and robust servo control system, while sacrificing a minimum amount of valuable disk space to the servo information field.

Downlink and uplink channel structures for downlink shared channel system

An uplink and downlink channel structure supports a shared downlink data channel. The new structure accommodates advanced physical and Medium Access Control (MAC) layer techniques, such as incremental redundancy (IR), fast adaptation to channel conditions, and multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna configuration. The proposed changes are intended to lead to a downlink structure that achieves higher spectral efficiency for the packet oriented services over then shared downlink channel. Additionally, the new structure uses the base station transmit power information and of the channelization (OVSF) code space more efficiently.

Forwarding packets to a directed acyclic graph destination using link selection based on received link metrics

Each network node having at least one destination-oriented link toward a directed acyclic graph (DAG) destination can receive a corresponding set of path performance metrics via the destination-oriented link. The set of path performance metrics, initiated by the DAG destination outputting initial link metrics on each of its source-connecting links, identifies aggregate link metrics for a corresponding path to the DAG destination via the corresponding destination-oriented link. The network node outputs a corresponding updated set of path performance metrics on each of its source-connecting links based on the received set of path performance metrics and the corresponding link metric for the corresponding source-connecting link. Hence, each network node in the DAG can assess the performance of each connected path to the DAG destination, and forward a data packet via a selected destination-oriented link based on the corresponding path performance metrics and forwarding policies for the forwarded data packet.

Delivery of Electric Power by Means of a Plurality of Parallel Inverters and Control Method Based on Maximum Power Point Tracking

The system provides for one or more photovoltaic panels (3) or other energy sources, connected to a series of inverters (5) in parallel, the outputs of which are connected to a load (Z) and / or to an electricity distribution grid (7). One of the inverters operates as master unit and generates a power control signal in order to track the maximum power point that can be obtained from the panels (3). The other inverters operate as slave units. The control is performed so that all the inverters absorb a variable quantity of power according to the fluctuations in the power available at the output of the photovoltaic panels (3) or other source subject to fluctuations.

Method and apparatus for high rate packet data transmission

In a data communication system capable of variable rate transmission, high rate packet data transmission improves utilization of the forward link and decreases the transmission delay. Data transmission on the forward link is time multiplexed and the base station transmits at the highest data rate supported by the forward link at each time slot to one mobile station. The data rate is determined by the largest C / I measurement of the forward link signals as measured at the mobile station. Upon determination of a data packet received in error, the mobile station transmits a NACK message back to the base station. The NACK message results in retransmission of the data packet received in error. The data packets can be transmitted out of sequence by the use of sequence number to identify each data unit within the data packets.

System and method for automatically building an OLAP model in a relational database

A system automatically generates OLAP metadata objects for a multidimensional analysis program such as OLAP from SQL statements without involving the database administrator, and eliminates the need for database administrators to manually perform this analysis and design. The system deconstructs a set of SQL statements into tables and aggregates metrics for measures and joins. It recognizes that the relational database structure contains both dimension tables and fact tables. Over many SQL statements, fact tables will have a large measure metric while dimension tables will have a low measure metric. Tables are linked based on large join metrics; small join metrics are ignored. The present system builds the OLAP cube model from the fact tables, dimension tables, and joins. The analysis of the SQL statements allows the system to map the hierarchies within the dimension table, and provides the system with information about attribute relationships and cubes.

Method of transmitting data with optimized transmission rate using packet header that defines data encoding parameters

For transmitting data between a base station and a transponder, information packets modulated onto an electromagnetic carrier wave each include a header section, a middle section, and an end section. The data are encoded in the middle section using information symbols, e.g. representing digital "1s" and "0s". The header section of at least the first packet defines the number and unique identifications of all of the symbols that will be used for encoding the data in the middle section of this and / or subsequent packets. This transmission protocol defined in the header section can be varied in subsequent packets to adaptively adjust the transmission rate depending on the existing communication conditions and requirements such as high frequency regulations prescribed by national law. The transmission rate can be considerably increased, in comparison to a transmission rate that would otherwise be necessary for achieving a reliable transmission even under unfavorable conditions.

Methods and apparatus for interfacing a drawing memory with a remote display controller

A method of transmitting encoded computer display images between computers over a nondeterministic network is disclosed. During a display session in which images are transmitted from a host to a client, the client requests sections of encoded image updates at a predetermined time in advance of when the requested at least one section is to be transmitted by the display controller. When the requested section is received, a time value is compared to a display controller timing value and, if the difference between the compared times is outside of an acceptable range, the client adjusts a predetermined time at which time the client requests image sections from the host.
