Embodiment Construction

[0043] Microsurgery / Capsulotomy Equipment

[0044] Embodiments of the invention are described herein in the context of lens capsule surgery in which a portion of the anterior surface of the lens capsule is cut. This technique can be used in the treatment of cataracts in which all or part of the lens inside the lens capsule is removed from the eye. The process can also be used to create an access hole in the lens capsule for implantation of an artificial lens (such as an intraocular lens or IOL) within the lens capsule. Additionally, the techniques and devices described herein may be useful tools for performing other medical procedures that may or may not currently exist, such as corneal surgery or surgery involving tissues other than those in the eye.

[0045] figure 1 is a top perspective view of a microsurgery or capsulotomy device according to one embodiment of the invention, and figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of the device. These figures illustrate the device (50)...

Abstract

A surgical device and procedure are provided for performing microsurgery, including a capsulotomy of a lens capsule of an eye. The device has an elastically deformable cutting element mounted within an elastomeric suction cup. The suction cup is attached to an arm for manipulating the device. The device can be inserted into the anterior chamber of the eye, through a corneal incision, to cut a piece from the anterior portion of the lens capsule of the eye. The device is secured against the lens capsule using suction applied by one or more suction elements. The device is then removed from the eye, with the cut piece of membrane retained within the device by suction.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims review of U.S. Provisional Application No. 61 / 127,700, filed May 15, 2008, entitled "Ophthalmic Surgical Device for Capsulotomy," and U.S. Provisional Application No. 61 / 201,465, filed December 11, 2008, entitled "Ophthalmic Surgical Device for Capsulotomy." Priority of the application, the entire disclosure of both applications, including any appendices or annexes thereto, is hereby incorporated by reference for all purposes. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to tissue microsurgery and in particular to procedures and apparatus for creating precise openings in tissue of desired diameter and shape. For example, the procedures and devices may be used in ophthalmic surgery of the anterior lens capsule of the eye. Background technique [0004] Lens cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide, and cataract removal surgery is the treatment of choice. A catar...
