[0076] Subject group

[0077]The subject group consisted of 600 healthy individuals, aged 18-45 years, recruited from the general population of São Paulo, Brazil. Subjects were selected to include equal numbers of males and females, and to represent the distinct ethnic mix - African, European, Middle Eastern and Asian descent - that characterizes the São Paulo population. At the time the trial was conducted, all procedures were approved by the Institutional Review Board of Sirio Libanes Hospital and by the National Research Ethics Committee of the Brazilian Ministry of Health (HSL2007 / 25Process no.25000.114841 / 2007-17).

[0078] Sample Collection

[0079] Each subject provided 3 urine samples with 3-5 days between each sample administration. Urine samples were collected from subjects in the morning fasted state (before breakfast). Subjects were taught to collect intermediate effluent samples. Sodium azide (3 mM) was added to the collected urine as an antimicrobial agent. ...

Abstract

The present invention generally relates to the field of biomarkers. For example, the present invention relates to biomarkers that can be used to assess the likelihood of having the FUT2 secretor genotype in a subject. The invention also relates to biomarkers that can be used to assess gut health. Fucose was identified as biomarker that can be used for these purposes.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to the field of biomarkers. For example, the invention relates to biomarkers that can be used to assess the likelihood that a subject has a FUT2 secreting genotype. The present invention also relates to biomarkers that can be used to assess gut health. Fucose was identified as a biomarker that could be used for these purposes. Background technique [0002] Gut health and comfort are closely related to the proper balance of microbial species that colonize the gut [Round JL, Mazmanian SK (2009) Nat Rev Immunol 9:313-323]. Disruption of this balance has been linked to a variety of conditions ranging from malaise to debilitating diseases such as Crohn's disease. The composition of gut microbes in turn depends on a variety of factors, including diet and lifestyle, with genetic predisposition increasingly being recognized as a crucial factor. Among the genetic factors, the FUT2 gene plays a central role [McGovern D...
