Embodiment Construction

[0025] The following description describes a method and device for forwarding IP packet fragments without reassembly using the information field of the IP packet associated with the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) layer 4-7 header information. In an embodiment, the field of the IP packet may be a header field.

[0026] In the following description, many specific details are stated (such as types and relationships of system components, resource partition / sharing / repetitive implementation, logic implementation, and logic partition / integration options) in order to provide a more detailed understanding of the present invention. However, those skilled in the art will realize that the present invention may be practiced without such specific details. In other examples, the control structure, gate-level circuits, and full software instruction sequence are not shown in detail to avoid obscuring the present invention. Through the included description, those skilled in the art will be a...

Abstract

A network element of a software-defined networking (SDN) system forwards IP packet fragments without reassembly is disclosed. The network element receives an IP packet fragment and determines whether the fragment is the first fragment of an original IP packet. If the fragment is the first fragment, then fields in the first fragment that are associated with open systems interconnection layers (OSI) 4-7 are retrieved and placed in an entry in a fragment information table so that the entry is associated with the original IP packet. If the received fragment is not the first fragment, then a matching entry in the fragment information table is to be identified and the associated OSI layers 4-7 information is retrieved for processing the non-first fragment.

Description

Technical field [0001] The embodiments of the present invention relate to the application field of software-defined networking (SDN), and more specifically, to the exchange of IP packet fragments in an SDN system. Background technique [0002] The inherent characteristic of software-defined networking (SDN) systems is the physical separation of control and data plane entities. In this model, the application (or network service) running on the top of the network controller manages the strategy of the entire network, and instructs the network controller to actively or reactively install forwarding entities in the network element. The collection of forwarding entities in all network elements forms the forwarding state of the network. The network controller acts as a network operating system that controls and manages these programmable network elements and provides program interfaces to higher-level network management and control applications. [0003] For example, SDN applications s...
