Abstract

Disclosed herein is an active introducer sheath system that expands by activating a translation mechanism at a handle. The sheath has an internal cylindrical structure of mixed stationary elongated rods and moving elongated rods bound together by attachment wires. Activation of the translation mechanism causes the moving rod to move axially relative to the fixed rod, thereby changing the internal tension in the attachment line. The increased tension draws the fixed and moving rods closer together, reducing the diameter of the cylindrical structure. The reduced tension in the attachment wires moves the fixed and moving rods apart, thereby increasing the diameter of the cylindrical structure. A prosthetic device, such as a prosthetic heart valve, can be passed through the expanded sheath and to the implantation site. During implantation, the sheath can shrink back to its original outer diameter and expand again to remove the delivery device.
