Abstract

The invention relates to an active introducer sheath system. Disclosed herein is an active introducer sheath system that is expanded by activating a translation mechanism at a handle. The sheath has an internal cylindrical structure of a hybrid fixed elongate bar and moving elongate bar bounded together by an attachment wire. Actuating the translation mechanism causes the moving rod to move axially relative to the fixed rod, thereby changing internal tension in the attachment wire. The increased tension pulls the fixed rod and the movable rod together, so that the diameter of the cylindrical structure is reduced. The reduced tension in the attachment line moves the fixed rod and the moving rod apart, thereby increasing the diameter of the cylindrical structure. A prosthetic device, such as a prosthetic heart valve, may pass through the expanded sheath and reach an implantation site. During implantation, the sheath may contract back to its original outer diameter and expand again to remove the delivery device.
