Problems solved by technology

Unfortunately, the gain value of the first pulse is not always indicative of the overall gain value of the target vector, so the fit to the target vector is not always accurate

Embodiment Construction

[0067] Referring now to Figures 1, 2, 3A and 3B, these illustrate a first embodiment of the present invention. The speech processing system of the present invention comprises at least a short-term predictive analyzer 10 , a long-term predictive analyzer 12 , an object vector generator 13 and a maximum likelihood quantization multi-pulse analysis (MP-MLQ) unit 14 .

[0068] Short-term predictive analyzer 10 receives on input line 16 an input frame of a speech signal consisting of a plurality of digitized speech samples. Typically, there are 240 speech samples per frame, and frames are often divided into subframes. Typically, there are 4 subframes, each typically 60 samples long. The input frame may be a frame of an original speech signal, or a processed form of the original speech signal.

[0069] The short-term predictive analyzer 10 also receives an input frame on an input line 16 and produces a short-term characteristic of the input frame on an output line 17 . In one emb...

Abstract

A speech processing system and method are disclosed. In the present invention, the system includes at least a maximum likelihood quantization (MLQ) multi-pulse analysis unit, operating on a target vector. The MLQ multi-pulse analysis unit typically determines an initial gain level for the multi-pulse sequence and performs single gain multi-pulse analysis a number of times, each with a different gain level. The pulse sequence which most closely represents the target vector is provided as an output signal. In another embodiment, the system includes at least a pulse train multi-pulse analysis unit wherein the target vector is modeled as a series of pulse trains. Each pulse train comprises a plurality of single gain pulses.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to speech processing systems and, in particular, to multipulse analysis systems. Background technique [0002] Speech signal processing is well known in the art and is commonly used to compress incoming speech signals for storage or transmission. Speech signal processing generally involves dividing an input speech signal into frames and then analyzing each frame to determine its components. The components are then stored or transmitted. [0003] Typically, frame analyzers determine the short-term and long-term characteristics of speech signals. The frame analyzer can also determine one or both of the short-term and long-term components (or "contribu-tions") of the speech signal. For example, linear predictive coefficient analysis (LPC) provides short-term characteristics and contributions, while pitch analysis and prediction provides long-term characteristics and long-term contributions. [0004] Typically, e...
