Problems solved by technology

As the oil pressure increases, the hydraulic loss increases and cannot be recovered
Quiet and smooth shifting can be achieved with wet clutch packs, but at the cost of added complexity, such as dedicated oil pumps and hydraulic control valve packs to balance the desired clutch contact area

Embodiment Construction

[0038] figure 1 is a schematic illustration of a marine vehicle 100 including a multi-plate clutch (MFC) transmission 21 in accordance with an aspect of the present invention. figure 2 An embodiment of an MFC transmission 21 according to an aspect of the invention is shown. The MFC transmission 21 includes an input shaft 23 connectable to a prime mover 25 such as an engine or an electric motor. The input gear 27 is mounted on the input shaft 23 and cannot rotate relative to the input shaft 23 .

[0039] The MFC transmission 21 also includes an output shaft 29 including an externally threaded portion 31 having external threads 33 . The output gear 35 is coaxially mounted on the output shaft 29 and is rotatable relative to the output shaft 29 . The output gear 35 is engaged with the input gear 27 and the output gear 35 is arranged to rotate in the first rotational direction when the input shaft rotates in the input shaft rotational direction. For example, when input gear 27...

Abstract

A multi-plate clutch transmission includes a structure for selectively engaging clutches by moving a sleeve to move one or more friction discs on the sleeve connected to a shaft into contact with one or more friction discs on a clutch basket, the clutch basket is connected to a gear driven by another gear and another shaft driven by a prime mover. A structure for selectively disengaging the clutch is provided that uses prime mover torque to disengage the one or more friction discs on the sleeve from the one or more friction discs on the clutch basket.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates generally to transmissions, and more particularly to multi-plate transmissions. Background technique [0002] In transmissions for marine vehicles, dog clutches, cone clutches and hydraulic plate clutches are commonly used. A conventional cone clutch for a marine vehicle transmission is shown in US Patent No. 3,269,497, which is incorporated herein by reference. The cone clutch works in three positions. In the neutral position, the cone rotation is stationary, while the bevel gear rotates via the input shaft meshing with eg a pinion. There are gears above the cone clutch and gears below the cone clutch, and these gears mesh with the pinion to rotate in opposite directions. Each gear has a rigidly attached shift cup facing the cone clutch. As the shift lug shown pushes up on the cone, the cone begins to contact the shift cup that rotates the gear up. Once cup-cone contact is established, the resulting friction forces the cone...
