The invention provides a battery management system used for controlling charging and discharging of battery packs, the battery management system comprises: at least two battery packs, each battery pack comprises a plurality of battery cells and a battery management module, the plurality of battery cells are connected in series, the battery management module is electrically connected to the battery cells and used for monitoring and acquiring state data of battery cells in the corresponding battery pack, and a battery code is also stored in each battery management module and is used for identifying the type of the corresponding battery pack; and battery management system also comprises a management unit which is electrically connected to the battery management module and is used for acquiring the battery codes and the battery cell state data of the corresponding battery packs and determining the types of the battery packs and the corresponding battery pack states according to the battery codes and the battery cell state data.
